Open day 12th August 2017

Another successful day!

We have an open day to promote the benefits to the community of having an allotment but it's not dry and boring, it's a really nice social occasion. which is great fun for us and for the visitors.  This, and our fantastic new facilities, help us to attract more members to keep the allotment association alive and relevant and to safeguard its future.

There was a steady stream of people all day, who came to sample the home-made wine, have a burger or hotdog from the BBQ or a coffee and cake, take a tour around the site and take some fresh produce or a tombola prize home.

We must be very righteous because the weather was lovely and people sat outside at the picnic tables with their tea and cakes. There were several sets of visitors who had been tempted to come because they'd had one of our flyers through the door, they were shown around the site in the company of enthusiastic members who sold it so well that we now have even more allotmenteers and no vacancies!

It was nice to see even more of our existing members come this year and take the chance to talk to each other, our site is so large that  we don't get to see each other very often.

The community area was the hub of the event and this year we could show off the new developments - the improved seating area outside, the pavilion with electricity and a nearly finished kitchen and proper flushing toilets!

The food was fantastic, will it ever be bettered! The cake table looked like the result of a bake-off competition, savouries were covered by the BBQ (another trained chef in charge!) with all the sauce/sides you could want with your yummy hotdog or burger, home-made pizzettas, vegetable bread and corn fritters.

The tombola did a roaring trade and the produce looked impressive. We even had some chickens come to visit (care of one of our plot holders), they were impressed too.

We probably raised nearly £300 from the day, final figures aren't in yet. Some will go to charity and the rest to the community area.

Any produce that wasn't snapped up by the visitors was taken to the Edward St Day Centre that make lunches for the homeless and provide a a meal for other vulnerable people through the week.

A huge thank you to everyone that came, made things, brought stuff, organised, tidied the site, made tea and put leaflets through doors. Some members put in a lot of hard work and have been very generous with their time to prepare for this day so that everyone could enjoy themselves, we're all very grateful.
